The Bean Series 2 is designed to be the central piece in an office conference room, creating a playful and dynamic atmosphere. The table features a curvy shape with wiggly curves, which adds a touch of whimsy to the space. The three parts of the table can be reconfigured to create a variety of seating arrangements, allowing for flexibility and adaptability.
One of the unique features of the Bean Series 2 is the use of visual color edge bands at the male and female curves, which provide easy understanding of how the parts should come together. This not only adds a visual element to the table but also enhances the user experience.
The table top is made of wood veneer, with protective laminate edge bands around the perimeter edge. Some of the edge bands are in different colors for easy recognition of the connection points. The table base is made of bespoke steel table legs, providing stability and durability.
Designed using CAD and 3D modeling software, each curve of the table is determined through various user seating arrangement simulations. This ensures that the table's shape does not compromise users' ergonomics while creating a visually striking design.
The Bean Series 2 was installed in January 2014 for the office of the creative agency Cheil in Hong Kong. It is part of a wider agenda of object design research, aimed at investigating the spatial effects on social relationships caused by furniture installations in specific environments. The table challenges traditional formal dining tables and aims to break down social boundaries, encouraging conversations and fostering a sense of community.
The Bean Series 2 has received recognition for its innovative design. It was awarded the Silver A' Design Award in 2014, which recognizes outstanding expertise and innovation in furniture design. This award highlights the table's strong technical characteristics and splendid artistic skill, showcasing a remarkable level of excellence.
